Trekking & Hiking in Kyrgyzstan
Kyrgyzstan is one of Central Asia's great trekking countries, with routes like Ala-Köl and Altyn-Arashan crossing alpine passes, glacier-fed lakes and summer pastures.
With mountains covering most of the country, Kyrgyzstan offers everything from gentle valley walks to demanding multi-day treks over 3,000-metre passes. The scenery is the draw: turquoise lakes, glaciers, wildflower meadows and shepherds' camps where you can still stop for a bowl of fresh kymyz.
The classics cluster around Karakol in the east. The Ala-Köl trek climbs to a vivid alpine lake and usually pairs with a soak in the Altyn-Arashan hot springs. The Jyrgalan valley has newer, well-marked trails that suit walkers who want scenery without the biggest crowds. Further afield, routes near Song-Köl and in the central Tien Shan reward those with more time and acclimatisation.
A few practical notes:
- Season: mid-June to mid-September is the safe window for high passes; snow can linger on Ala-Köl into early summer.
- Fitness and altitude: many treks cross passes above 3,500 m, so come with some hill fitness and build in an acclimatisation day.
- Guides: trails are lightly marked and weather turns fast, so a local guide (and often a pack horse) makes a big difference on multi-day routes.
We can arrange guided treks with permits, transfers, camping or homestay nights and porters or horses where needed. Whether you want a single big day out or a week on the trail, tell us your experience level and we'll match the route to your fitness.

Frequently asked questions
How hard is the Ala-Köl trek?
It's a challenging route that crosses a pass above 3,800 m, usually done over two to three days. You don't need technical skills, but good hill fitness and some acclimatisation help a lot, and snow can make the pass harder in early summer.
Do I need a guide to trek in Kyrgyzstan?
You can walk some marked valleys independently, but for multi-day treks over high passes we recommend a local guide. Trails are lightly signed, weather changes quickly, and a guide adds safety and local knowledge.
When is trekking season?
The main season runs from mid-June to mid-September. Outside this window, high passes may be snowbound and pasture camps closed. Lower valley walks can be enjoyable from May into October.
Can I combine trekking with hot springs?
Yes. The Ala-Köl route is often combined with the Altyn-Arashan hot springs, making a natural rest point. We can build a trek that ends or overnights at the springs.
